What interests me – she responds to the world around her deliberately using laborious processes (twisting, wrapping, weaving, cutting painting).
As artists, the significance of the laborious is that it gives us time to reflect in-process. It allows us time to respond to and modify what we are doing as the results unfurl before our eyes.
Her mixed media ”portraits” are of particular interest because they mirror the idea I had about presenting transgender identities through textiles works made from their clothing choices. Piwinski’s portraits also use discarded objects that are given to her by those depicted in the works which are recontextualized into a handwoven fabric that represents the essence of that person.
